The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Perioperative Services is a skilled administrator who is responsible for organizing,
integrating and leading the perioperative departments. This position has direct responsibility for the oversight and
management of the Bramhall Operating Rooms, Ambulatory Surgery Unit and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. Reporting to the
Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services, this position works collaboratively with leaders of Surgical Service Line, senior
administration, directors and other professional colleagues to meet the diverse and continually changing challenges of the
health care environment. The AVP must be a creative, autonomous, future-oriented, risk-taking entrepreneur who applies
critical thinking and effective leadership and management skills to ensure that quality care is provided through inspired
professionals in a cost efficient manner.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Masters degree in healthcare administration, business or related field with a minimum of seven to ten years of
directly related experience demonstrating increased and/or diversified responsibilities in operations leadership.
Bachelors or Masters in Nursing required.
2. Requires clinical expertise in direct patient care as normally acquired through approximately five years experience
as a nurse manager or director
3. Requires a high level of critical thinking and analytical skills to make management decisions at unit level and make
recommendations for consideration on departmental issues.
4. Requires the ability to integrate the knowledge of teaching principles and counseling techniques in order to direct
the growth of the unit staff.
5. Requires a high level of organization skills, effective time management and delegation strategies that include the
ability to rapidly prioritize and adjust work flow according to changing unit needs.
6. Skilled in clinical outcomes monitoring and continuous performance improvement.
Oversees daily operations of the Bramhall periop departments including the operating room, ambulatory surgery
unit, post anesthesia care unit.
Promotes a team environment with staff and physicians, facilitates communication between team members and
supports a culture of safety. Role models professional, constructive and positive relationships with all employees
and physicians at all times.
Ensures organizational safety, quality and patient experience goals are achieved, departmental and medical staff
policies and procedures are strictly adhered to.
Ensures organizational efficiency and satisfaction targets (when appropriate) are met/exceed benchmarks.
Collaborates with service line leadership to ensure departmental volume goals are achieved. Working in
partnership with the Director of Perioperative Operations and on-site anesthesia floor walker and OR coordinator
Evaluates emergent and urgent add-on cases based on patient needs and available resources. In conjunction with
the Director of Perioperative Operations and service line leadership, facilitates reallocation of OR block time, as
With support of surgical leadership, acts as a change agent in the operating rooms. Oversees the implementation
of operational improvements in the perioperative departments.
Provides input to the strategic planning process for surgical services, including facilities and technology
enhancements and staffing plans.
Improves/innovates upon current methods to effectively care for a large volume surgical service, while ensuring
that effective patient care throughput is not compromised.
Leads these complex departments with success in well-defined metrics
Effectively organizes and manages human resources and conflict resolution.
Supports evidenced based research and integrates it into the delivery of patient care and nursing leadership.
Utilizes research evidence as a basis for practice changes.
Is accountable for the measurement, assessment and improvement in department nurse sensitive indicators.
Encourages and supports staff in the conduct of and involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
Maximizes individuals potential, provides guiding goals and measures accomplishments.
